First grade just wrapped up our unit on the Human Body. We learned about 5 of our systems including the skeletal system🩻, muscular system💪, circulatory system🩸, digestive system🥗 and nervous system🧠. We ended our unit by having students’ parents who are healthcare workers come in to our classrooms to share how their jobs relate to the systems we learned about!🩺👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

On Monday, students enjoyed a special visit from our Author-in-Residence, Abby Regan, who shared her book 'Not Your Average Oatmeal'! 📚✨ Students loved listening to the story, seeing the pages come to life on the big screen — and the highlight of the day was a surprise cameo from none other than Oatmeal himself! 🐶💛

Ms. Cohen’s class had a blast bringing math to life today! 🍎🍇🍍 To wrap up their math unit, students designed three unique fruit kabobs — each with 10 pieces of fruit with at least three different types of fruit on each AND no two kabobs could be alike. Then, students chose their favorite kabob and made them in real life! A delicious and fun way to celebrate making 10! 🍎🍇🍍🍓🍉🍌

From taste-testing red, green, and yellow apples 🍏🍎, to sink-or-float science fun 🌊, to cooking up their very own applesauce — it was a bushel of hands-on learning and smiles! These little Roadrunners sure know how to make learning a-peel-ing! 💨🍂❤️

🍎 APPLE DAY FUN! 🍏 On Friday Mrs. Tinkoff's kindergarten classroom was bursting with apple excitement! They kicked things off by making homemade applesauce. Then they read Ten Apples Up on Top and created their own “ten apples on our head” crafts (balancing skills not required 😉). To wrap up their delicious day, they taste-tested all kinds of apple treats: Apple juice, apple cider donuts , apple pie, applesauce , dried apples, and freeze-dried apples. So much learning, laughter, and yumminess packed into one day!

We are thrilled to be ranked in the top 50 of best public elementary schools in Cook County by Chicago Magazine! Our students and staff work hard to make the Central community a great place to learn and grow — we appreciate being recognized!

According to Chicago Magazine, performance measures were based on 2023-24 data which included IAR growth, attendance, and the 5Essentials survey. Way to go, Roadrunners!

Elementary students will have slightly adjusted school hours starting with the 2025/26 school year. The elementary school day will begin at 8:10 AM and end at 3:00 PM. Supervised drop off begins at 7:50 am; students should be in their classroom when the bell rings at 8:10 am. Dismissal is promptly at 3:00 pm. If needed, before and after care is available through Riverside Parks and Recreation.

This change allows us more instructional time for reading, writing, and physical education throughout the week, while also improving lunch, recess, and transition times. The updated elementary lunch hour is 11:20 AM–12:20 PM.

Building principals will send a more detailed welcome email the first week of August. Early Learner and Hauser schedules remain the same.
