Hi Second Graders and adults!
 
Welcome to music.  Come on in respectful, responsible, and safe.  I'm glad you're here! 
 
Each week should have two lessons. Do the lesson for the week we are in and do them in the order they're presented.  Anything that is underlined is a link to materials you may need to help you with the objective.  And have fun!
 
Questions/Problems
 
If you have questions or problems please let me know.  You can ask your home adults to e-mail me at:  [email protected].  I'll be checking my e-mail, but depending on the number of e-mails I may take a while to respond.  If you are stuck on something then you should move on to another section of the lesson or start a new lesson and come back when you've heard from me.
Noon Tunes
 
If your classroom teacher has not asked you to listen to the Noon Tune every day you can do that for music class!   It's interesting and can give a few minutes of relaxation between your regular class work.

Monday, May 25, 2020 was Memorial Day.  Sing a patriotic song in honor of those who sacrifice to keep our country safe and free.
 
1.  Perform the songs you know from Veterans Day.

     a.  Sing the song  (I think you should know this one.)
     b.  Sing the song, but change the tempo (tempo means speed)
          i.  Introduction to the metronome.  Try it yourself on google metronome.
          ii.  Sing with different tempi
               a.  Presto  (quarter note = 192)
               b.  Allegro (quarter note = 120)
               c.  Andante (quarter note = 92)
               d. Largo  (quarter note = 60)
     c.  Sing the song in a new mode (it was major, sing it in minor.)

     OPTIONAL:  The ostinato for the song When the Saints Go Marching In is about Martin Luther King Jr.  In 1963 Dr. King led hundreds of thousands of people in two famous marches, the Freedom Walk in Detroit and the March on Washington where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.  
 
     a.  Listen to the "I Have a Dream" speech.
          i.  How many times does he say the word "dream"?
          ii.  In the end of the speech Dr. King quotes a line from a famous American song.  What is that line?
     b.  Listen to the Dr. King week of noon tunes based on songs about his life and taken from his speeches.

Objective:  I can perform accents.
 
          a.  Perform the accented notes by emphasizing them.  They are more important sounding.
          b.  Pat the accented notes and clap the unaccented notes.
 
          a.  Clap, pat or snap the rhythm cards.
          b.  Put an accent mark under the third beat of each card and make that note accented.

Objective:  I can perform an ostinato.
 
1.  Who's that?
     a.  Learn the song.
          i.  A section
          ii.  B section
     b.  Learn the ostinato
     c.  Perform the A section of the song while listening to the ostinato and perform the A section of the song while listening to the ostinato.  Don't mess up!
     d.  Tell a good joke!  (Make your joke the B section of the song and perform the song in ABA form.)
          i.  Need to learn a new knock, knock joke?  Here's a resource!

     a.  Listen for the ostinati in this song.
     b.  Perform one of your rhythm cards as an ostinato with the song.
     c.  Change your ostinato when the music changes from a chorus to a verse.
     d.  Optional challenge:  Perform your ostinato on a homemade percussion instrument.

1.  Listen to this guy play water glasses.
2.  Make your own water glass xylophone and play it!

Objective:  I can perform and create using half notes.
 
1.  Warm-up
 
          a.  Use the cards from the packet that was sent home or print these rhythm cards.
          b.  Clap, pat, snap and say the rhythms; hands on shoulders for rests
          c.  Create a row of four cards and clap them all in order.  Then change the order of the cards!  Or add more cards!
 
a. Sing the song
b. Do a warm-up of the boxes by clapping each box 4 times. Then clap each box one time in order.
c. Create a pattern of the boxes. "They can't be all the same, and they can't be everything different".
Possible patterns: aabb, abab, aaab, abba, aabc, abac
d. To get on gold make your last box a half note.
 
a. Sing the ostinato. Which word is a half note?
b. Sing the song.
c. With another person (if you can) have one person sing the ostinato while the other sings the song.
 
5.  Fill out the exit slip.
 
OPTIONAL:
a. Sing the song
b. Create 4 boxes with different states in them. Clap the rhythm then figure out a state that you can put under the rhythm.
c. Sing the song then improvise using the boxes. "They can't be all the same, and they can't be everything different."
Objective:  I can perform and create using the pitches do, re, and mi.
 
 
          a.  Using the three line staff and something from home for notes (coins work very well) create a melody using the pitches do, re, and mi.  Four notes should work well.
          b.  Sing what you wrote.  
          c.  Write a new melody using these notes. 
          d.  Write the ostinato for "Go 'Round the Mountain".  (do, do, mi)  Sing the ostinato.
 
2.  Go 'Round the Mountain
          a.  Sing the song
          b.  Use the three line staff to write the notes for the last half of the song.
          c.  Check your answer here.
 
3.  Bow Wow Wow
          a.  Sing the song
          b.  What are the last three notes of the song?
          c.  Do the dance by yourself or with someone there.
 
4.  Fill out the exit slip.
